About the Masterclass
Study and Perform​

This masterclass is geared toward conductors who wish to have an immersive conducting experience and receive guidance on career advancement. A maximum of 24 participants will spend an intense two weeks participating in daily masterclasses and rehearsals. With a total of 12 public concerts to be conducted by the participants, participants will learn an extensive list of symphonic and concerto repertoire. 

 

There is no age limit to apply.

About the Competition

The German Institute of Conducting is dedicated to mentoring emerging conductors and helping them advance their career. During the masterclass, a panel of conducting faculty members will choose the top three conductors to be announced after the final concert. 

 

These three winners will each receive a concert engagement in the 2022-23 season, with the potential of future concert engagements with our partners in Brazil, Austria, Bulgaria, Italy and other countries.

Each participant will stay in a double-room, meaning that each participant will have one roommate.  The Frankenland Hotel features spa's, pool's, and many more accommodations.  Breakfast is included in the package.  The hotel is walking distance from where our daily activities will take place.

A Detailed Look at the Schedule​

Our schedule is busy for the admitted participants of the German Institute of Conducting.  While you will have one day off per the two-week venture, you will be busy otherwise, with the orchestra, the community, or classes.  We will have regular daily classes and time with the orchestra.  Additionally, each participant will be obliged to integrate with the community.

Understand Where you are Coming

The Staatsbad Philharmonie Kissingen holds the Guinness World Record for most number of concerts performed in one year, 727 to be exact.  There are sometimes three concerts a day with more than 200 people in attendance per concert.

Bad Kissingen was one of the leading spas in the 19th and early 20th century, which in German are called "Weltbad".  It is now considered a resort area where many Germans tend to retire.  It has often been referred to as the Fort Lauderdale of Germany.

The violinist and violist Burghard Tölke, who was born in Hanover, received his first lessons at the age of 8 in Bad Pyrmont with Mrs. Barbara Rau-Reuter. His studies took him via Weimar, Detmold, New York to Vienna, where he graduated with the academic degrees “Master of Art” and “Master of Art Education” at the Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien“ .He studied with the legendary Primus of the Amadeus Quartet, Norbert Brainin, with Vladimir Malinin, with the Heifetz Student  Thomas Christian and with the 1st concertmaster of the

“Wiener Symphoniker”, Florian Zwiauer.  He has won several first prizes and grants in competitions such as “Jugend Musiziert”, “Fidelio Competition”, “Gradus ad Parnassum” etc.

 

He also received musical impulses from Zakhar Bron, Isaac Stern and Igor Petrucevsky. He attended master classes including with Yehudi Menuhin, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Roman Totenberg, Siegmund Nissel and Viktor Tretyakov.

Burghard Tölke is a sought-after guest concertmaster and soloist around the world.

He is currently the director of the “Staatsbad Philharmonie Kissingen” and professor for violin and viola at the “Richard Wagner Konservatorium” in Vienna.
